Bryan Adams Is Writing More Songs Than Ever

Bryan Adams' status as one of the most successful singer/songwriters of his generation hasn't slowed him down, even almost five decades into his career.

Adams himself counts the last two years as some of the most creative of his entire life. He tells Q104.3's Out of the Box With Jonathan Clarke that between working on Broadway's Pretty Woman: The Musical, which debuted in March 2018, and recording his new album, Shine A Light (available now), he estimates he's written more than 50 songs over the last two years.

"That's an extraordinary output," he tells the show. "You have a mission everyday if you're working on a musical. You know that you have to deliver this by 4 o'clock, and it's 10 a.m. You gotta go and sit and write and make it happen."

He describes the Broadway process as exiting, stressful, rewarding and exhausting. By the time he was back to writing his own music, Adams was interested in hearing someone else's creative voice on one of his ideas. So he did what anyone else in the pop world would do: he called Ed Sheeran.

“In terms of my songwriting, I’ve always been sort of the person you’d want to jam with because I’ll definitely come up with a decent mumble," he says. "But on my own, I usually come up with fragments of songs. So when I met Ed, and we started talking, I thought, ‘I have this idea, I think he would know where to take it. Or maybe he’d take it somewhere I wouldn’t.'"

Adams has played well with others for years. He notes that in the '90s he wrote many songs for films alongside composer Michael Kamen and producer Mutt Lange. He describes getting a rush from the "unusual chemistry" of creative collaboration.

"I mean, I know what I could do," Adams says. "I could probably finish [the song] if I sat down, but I'm quite interested to see where you'd take it. That's why I sent that to Ed because I said, 'I bet he'll come up with something.' And he did."
